Jade Phoenix Syd Goldsmith 9780595375493 Books Reviews

This is one of those novels that you had better not pick up unless the kids are fed and you don't mind staying up all night! In other words, it's one of those rare novels that is so engrossing that you may find the rest of your life flying by--but you don't really care. Syd Goldsmith is one of those exceedingly talented writers who can utterly transport you into another time and place, and in the process, utterly bewitch you with memorable characters. On a more intellectual level, it's a wonderful introduction to a lot of the political and intellectual history connected with China and Taiwan, and without the tears. Highly recommended.
"Jade Phoenix" is compelling story of love, life and clashing cultures. Mr. Goldsmith breathes life, in all it's intricacy, into his characters and he has crafted them with great care and passion. The exotic locales exude an authenticity of sights, sounds and tastes. Mr. Goldsmith invites the reader into Jade Phoenix's world and we step through time and space and walk beside her. This story is about conflicting cultures and volatile politics but the central thread of the story is the woman, Jade. Her heart, her soul and her spirit are the driving forces of this book. If you like stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary circumstances, you will like "Jade Phoenix". The hallmark of any great book is, "does it make the reader care about the characters?" This book will make you care. I thought about this book long after I finished it.
I enjoyed this book quite a lot - it portrays the era well without beating you over the head with it, while still feeling current.

The politics involved are made easy to understand (no easy feat!) and help paint the picture of what's going on in the background and how it affects the characters' lives.

Quite enjoyable. )
Jade Phoenix is a profound introduction to Taiwan culture, history, and politics set in an unforgettable story. If you don't know a thing about Taiwan, start here. Goldsmith's writing style is much like Chinese calligraphy. What may at first appear to be a simple graphic, especially to the untrained eye, is really something much more complex, much more eloquent, much more beautiful. Goldsmith illustrates the huge divide between Western and Asian culture and he does it effortlessly with characters you can't leave and a plot so engrossing you can't put the book down. Under his fluid pen, both cultural perspectives are articulately expressed. He brings to life the tragic consequences for past, present, and future generations in Taiwan from the atrocities committed by mainland China as well as Chiang Kai-shek's brutal dictatorship. He unveils the historical events that never made it to Western media. He further shows how American foreign policy shaped and shackled the Taiwanese. Read the book for its uncompromising portrayal of a people caught at crossroads and in crossfires not of their making. Read the book for its history lessons. Read the book for its incomparable love story. Read the book because it's one of the best damn reads you'll come across!
It is such a joy to read Jade Phoenix, a New Voices in Literature Award finalist.
A long-time diplomat, Mr. Goldsmith has first-hand experience and in-depth knowledge about the US-Taiwan-China relationships, and as such he was able to depict the characters and political and cultural scenes with great care and sensibility. We learn why the local Taiwanese despise the KMT party, although they are literally the ‘same’ people from China.
Mr. Goldsmith undoubtedly has the talent -- his prose is fluid and eloquent. The images about the food, the fishing village, and life of the people in Tainan before KMT's arrival are vividly portrayed. One sees, feels and smells the scenes in his book.
I think the message of the book is about accepting one’s own life and destiny. Why Ko-sa has all the wealth and the woman he wants, but still yearns for a son? Why Nick turns against his best friend because of a woman?
Jade Phoenix is a great book. Read it for its wonderful writing and compelling character development. Along the way, you’ll learn a lot about the history of Taiwan.
This is one of those books you don't see coming, probably have someone give to you after they have read it and most definitely will pass on to the next person you want to read a great story. Such a nice change of pace from the typical although enjoyable books from James Patterson. My only hope is this author has time to write some additional works. Buy it, gift it, but just make sure you read it!
The book was delivered on time and in great condition. I am looking forward to reading it soon and it is in my "to read next" stack. I will write more after I've read it.
I genuinely loved this book! I read it for grad school and its still one of the more memorable books I've owned. Very simple read but a great story.
